Strategic Initiatives: Alternative Energy Strategies

One of the most commonly heard terms today is sustainability. The limited resources of our planet are rapidly depleting, and the use of fossil fuels is accelerating global warming. In the scope of environmental sustainability, the search for new energy sources that are renewable, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient has become crucial, along with sustainable development goals and decarbonization policies planned worldwide.

In fact, these energy sources have been in our lives for a long time. In the 4th millennium BC, the first sailboat with a sail made of papyrus was launched, allowing the Egyptians to sail on the Nile using the power of the wind. According to legend, two thousand years ago, the scientist Archimedes burned the invading Roman fleets using large mirrors and sunlight, a story that is still being talked about. We can say that the energy of wind formed on Earth by the Sun and its rays has been known and used by humanity throughout history. Of course, things work a little differently nowadays.

Today, much more systematic work is being done on solar and wind energy. Especially Turkey is a very efficient country in terms of solar energy, and as of 2022, the share of solar energy in the total installed capacity is 8.5%. By 2035, it is aimed to reach a share of 28% of the total installed capacity of solar energy, while more than 50% of the total energy demand is expected to be met from renewable energy sources. As Borusan Cat, we started the process of adding solar energy systems to our portfolio as an engineering solution that we offer to our customers since 2022, and we are increasing our experience and knowledge in solar energy, which we can consider as a component of more complex systems such as energy storage and micro-grids.

Other trends of our time include alternative fuels, with methanol, biofuels, and hydrogen being at the forefront. Green hydrogen energy, which is one of the alternative fuels with the potential to completely change future fuel trends and is produced by using renewable energy to electrolyze water and move electrons, has emerged recently along with decarbonization. This product became the new focus of sustainability goals as it emits only water vapor into the environment. Although hydrogen and fuel cells are relatively new concepts for most people, they are considered the fuel of the future by most expert sources.

Borusan Cat carries out many activities in our three main focus areas: climate, people, and innovation. With our Alternative Energy Strategies initiative, we prioritize environmental benefit and energy efficiency in our climate focus area and aim to integrate energy trends into our processes in our innovation focus area. We continue our work by expanding and deepening the focus of our alternative energy systems strategic initiative to include the entire E&T industry and, subsequently, the CI and RI industries' energy transformation journey. Following the present-day concept of energy transformation, we implement our corporate goal "We Create Solutions For a Better World" and transform our business by focusing on decarbonization and green energy and building a green future.
