Resource Industry in Kazakhstan and Borusan Cat

Mining (as we call it Resource) has a significant impact on all of our lives, both directly and indirectly. In my opinion, mining is not only about extracting valuable minerals from underground but also one of the cornerstones of the economy. In this article, I would like to share the potential of Kazakhstan's mining industry and the contributions we, as Borusan Cat, are providing and can continue to offer to this sector.

How Great is Kazakhstan's Mining Potential?
Our country offers fertile ground for growth in the mining sector with its vast mineral reserves, strategic location, and developing infrastructure. The World Bank reports that Kazakhstan boasts over 5,000 mining sites, valued at $46 trillion, awaiting exploration. The goal is to increase production in our sector by 40% by 2029.

Potential Challenges and Solutions We Provide as Borusan Cat

However, as with every ambitious goal, there are challenges awaiting us on this path. These challenges include the depletion of ore sources in older mines, high energy costs, rising labor costs, and low efficiency.

The first challenge can be overcome thanks to our collaboration with Bauer, a manufacturer of drilling machines. By using drilling machines in surface mining, we enable production at minimum cost without shifting to underground mining.

We can address the issue of rising energy costs and inadequate energy sources with Caterpillar gas generator sets and green energy technologies. Gas-powered mining equipment allows our partners to reduce energy costs.

I believe we can also tackle the rising labor costs and low efficiency issues with our intellectual capital and advanced Caterpillar technologies. The consulting and outsourcing services we offer to our partners enhance their efficiency on-site.

Compliance with ESG Standards Through New Technologies and Methods

I observe that the mining industry is undergoing a significant transformation with technological innovations both in our country and globally. As Borusan Cat, we are playing a pioneering role in this transformation in Kazakhstan. With advanced Caterpillar technologies such as FLEET, TERRAIN, COMMAND, DETECT, and HEALTH, we help our partners manage their equipment fleets more efficiently. Through these systems, operators can monitor their equipment’s performance and health more closely, minimizing operational interruptions.

Kazakhstan’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement sets a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030. In this context, we, as Borusan Cat, promote the use of electric equipment in mines. Electric equipment, particularly in underground mining, reduces exhaust emissions and environmental impacts while also providing cost advantages by lowering ventilation costs.

Borusan Cat Rebuild Center (CRC) for Local Equipment Requirements
Kazakhstan’s membership in the World Trade Organization introduced a requirement for enterprises at mining sites to use a certain percentage of local equipment. At the Borusan Cat Rebuild Centers (CRC), we give second life to components (chassis, buckets, and lift cylinders) for Caterpillar machines. This not only contributes to the local economy but also offers our partners the opportunity to reduce their operational costs.
