Biodiversity (biological diversity) refers to the presence of different species of living things, plants, animals, microorganisms, and other life forms in an ecosystem and the relationships between these organisms. Biodiversity is acknowledged as a significant metric of the variety and abundance of life on our planet.

Genetic diversity refers to the genetic differences between individuals within different species. These genetic differences are important for organisms to adapt to the environment. Species diversity revolves around the quantity and assortment of distinct species within each geographical region. Diverse ecosystems encompassing various plant communities, water sources, forests, meadows, and more are regarded as manifestations of biodiversity.

Biodiversity is one of the most important factors for the health, functionality, and resilience of ecosystems. Since the coexistence of different species helps to create balanced food chains in ecosystems and to adapt to environmental changes more easily, the protection of biodiversity is considered a critical factor for the environment and human health.

Factors Which Are Affecting Biodiversity

Numerous factors exert influence on biodiversity. Among these, human activities are notably paramount. Actions initiated by humans, such as habitat degradation, agricultural methods, urban expansion, deforestation, and industrial operations, cause a decline in biodiversity.

Climate change also seriously affects biodiversity. Changes such as rising temperatures, sea level rise, and extreme weather events change the habitats of species and can reduce the chances of survival of some organisms.

The invasion of alien species into an ecosystem is another factor. Alien species introduced into an ecosystem by humans can compete with native species, causing local species to decline or upsetting the balance of local ecosystems. Overfishing and illicit trade similarly threaten biodiversity. The hunting of endangered species can swiftly diminish populations.

The combination of one or more of these factors can rapidly affect biodiversity and destabilize ecosystems. Therefore, protecting and responsibly managing biodiversity holds immense significance for both the environment and humanity.

Importance of Biodiversity for Natural Life

Biodiversity is of great importance for the natural world because the presence of diverse living organisms and ecosystems ensures the functionality and resilience of ecosystems. As with humans, every living thing needs other living things. Different species form food chains within ecosystems and maintain balance. For example, an increase or decrease in the population of one species has impacts on the entire ecosystem. Among the scenarios that reflect this situation, animals such as bears and mountain lions that appear in cities when they cannot find food are the first examples that come to mind. Interactions between plants, animals, and microorganisms also contribute to basic ecosystem functions such as pollination, soil fertility, and the water cycle. For example, we all know the importance of bees in ecosystem balance.

Biodiversity is also of great importance for humans. Plants and animals are the basis for many resources such as food sources, medicines, raw materials, and industrial products. Natural ecosystems also provide ecosystem services such as air and water purification, erosion control, and climate regulation. Preservation of biodiversity is crucial to sustain these ecosystem services and human welfare. Therefore, protecting biodiversity is considered a necessity both to ensure the continuity of natural life and to improve people's quality of life.
